3. Apron-Type Shot Blasting Machine

Product Overview

An apron-type shot blasting machine is designed for batch treatment of small and medium-sized metal components.

The workpieces are loaded onto a rubber or metal apron belt inside the blasting chamber.

As the belt rotates, the products continuously tumble and turn while abrasive media are projected onto them.

This type of equipment is also commonly called a tumble-belt or drum-type shot blasting machine.

Typical Applications

  • Small castings
  • Small forgings
  • Heat-treated components
  • Pressed metal parts
  • Gears
  • Sprockets
  • Bolts and nuts
  • Automotive components
  • Brackets
  • Housings
  • General industrial metal parts

3.1 Operating Principle

The operator or automatic loading system places the workpieces onto the apron belt inside the blasting chamber.

As the belt rotates, the products continuously tumble and expose different surfaces.

One or more blast wheels installed above or beside the chamber project abrasive media onto the moving products.

Because the products continuously roll and turn, the abrasive media can reach most areas of the surface and provide relatively uniform treatment.

After blasting is completed, the apron belt reverses direction or activates the discharge system to unload the finished products.

3.2 Main Components

An apron-type shot blasting machine generally consists of:

  • Blasting chamber
  • Rubber or metal apron belt
  • Blast wheel
  • Loading device
  • Unloading device
  • Screw conveyor
  • Bucket elevator
  • Abrasive separator
  • Storage hopper
  • Dust collector
  • Electrical control panel
  • Safety interlock system

Rubber Apron Belt

A rubber apron belt is suitable when reduced noise and lower product-surface damage are important.

It is commonly used for small and medium-sized components with moderate weight.

Metal Apron Belt

A metal apron belt is more suitable for:

  • Heavier products
  • High-temperature components
  • More abrasive operating conditions
  • Applications requiring higher mechanical durability

The appropriate belt type should be selected according to product weight, temperature, geometry, and impact resistance.

3.3 Advantages of Apron-Type Shot Blasting

  • Batch processing of multiple components
  • High production efficiency
  • Uniform treatment of multiple surfaces
  • Automated loading and unloading options
  • Reduced manual grinding and sanding
  • Simple operation
  • Relatively easy maintenance
  • Suitable for integration with casting, forging, and heat-treatment lines
  • Effective for repetitive medium- and high-volume production

3.4 Application Limitations

Because products tumble and contact one another inside the chamber, an apron-type machine may not be suitable for components that are highly sensitive to collision or deformation.

The following products require careful technical evaluation:

  • Thin parts that may bend or deform
  • Long shafts or rods
  • Products that may become entangled
  • Precision-machined parts sensitive to scratches
  • Brittle components
  • Products with delicate edges
  • Finished components requiring cosmetic surfaces

For these applications, a hanger-type shot blasting machine may be more appropriate.

3.5 Equipment Selection Criteria

An apron-type shot blasting machine should be selected based on the following factors:

  • Product size
  • Individual product weight
  • Batch loading capacity
  • Required hourly production output
  • Product material
  • Product hardness
  • Required surface-cleanliness grade
  • Required surface roughness
  • Product-to-product contact tolerance
  • Abrasive type and size
  • Blasting time per batch
  • Loading and unloading method
  • Dust-collection capacity
  • Local voltage and frequency

The maximum loading capacity should not be treated as the only operating standard.

If too many products are loaded into the chamber, they may not tumble freely.

This can create untreated areas, uneven blasting, and reduced processing efficiency.

The actual batch quantity should therefore be determined based on both machine capacity and the effective tumbling space required for the products.
